Directed by John Hughes Montage (by Barringer82)

What would the ’80s have been without the late, great John Hughes.

“Make ‘em laugh, make ‘em cry.” There’s only a handful of contemporary (and when I say this, I mean 70s-present) American auteurs that can invoke both emotions. Few artists are capable of capturing the essence of a young generation (Breakfast, Candles, Science, Bueller), the hurdles of a disenchanting adulthood (Baby, Planes), and what happens when both meet (Buck, Sue). What saddens me the most is the Hughes probably has written scripts ten times better than his 80s canon that will remain forever, on his hard drive, unproduced.

  2. Yes, but we have his protégé Judd Appatow now, right? Right?

I miss John Hughes movies so much, and they touch me more now than when I was a kid. Nostalgia mixed in with the innocence of the stories makes them even more potent.

I wish he was still working. Does Drillbit Taylor count?
